A little preparation makes an unfamiliar city easier to navigate. These practical habits cover belongings, transport and payments during a Bratislava stay. No city is risk-free, and individual experiences can differ.
Keep track of your belongings
Watch your phone, wallet and luggage in crowded streets, public transport, shopping centres and around attractions. Keep bags closed and do not leave them unattended on chairs or under tables. When taking photos, remember the belongings you are not holding.
Do not assume a potential thief will look or behave a particular way. Separating identification, cards and cash can prevent losing everything at once. Save your bank’s card-blocking contact details before travelling.
Roads, cycle lanes and trams
Use pavements and marked crossings. Do not treat cycle lanes as pedestrian space, and look both ways before crossing tracks. Surface colour alone is not a substitute for road signs.
Follow traffic signals and never assume a driver or tram will stop. Cross only when it is safe. Trams need a longer distance to brake, and you should still assess the situation where pedestrians have a green light.
Taxis and public transport
Confirm a taxi fare or how it will be calculated before travelling. Booking apps can make ordering and checking the price easier, but they are not always cheapest: demand and route affect fares. Make sure the vehicle matches your booking.
For public transport, check your ticket’s validity and how to use it. Do not guess zones or time limits from a previous visit; consult the operator’s current information.
ATMs and card payments
Choose an ATM by its operator and displayed fees, not whether its sign says ATM or bankomat. Bank-operated machines can also charge, and your own bank may add a fee.
Read withdrawal charges and offered exchange rates before confirming. Cancel if the terms are unsuitable. Watch the terminal when paying by card and never share your PIN.
